Borders Family History Society Sales We're clearing out our cupboards because we've run out of room for our library.
For some years we've been using other organisations' empty cupboards but they now want the space.
A while back, we had a generous donation of family history resources from someone who was moving into a smaller house, and there were some that we already had.
Some of the magazines produced by other family history societies are thus surplus to our needs, and so we're making them available to you at what we think is a reasonable price.
In every case, there is only one 'bundle' of the magazines for each society, so if you're interested, you need to get in quick.
We think these offers will be of interest to booksellers too.
If you're interested, contact our Sales Convenor, Ronald Morrison, as fast as you can by sending him a message on our contacts page using the contact type Order for Publications specifying your address. He'll reply quickly.
Prices quoted exclude postage as this depends on your location. If you're near us you could pick the bundle up at Old Gala House or at one of our meetings if you give Ronald sufficient notice.

Monumental Inscriptions Monumental inscriptions, gravestone inscriptions, tombstone inscriptions, headstone inscriptions, are the inscriptions placed on stones or slabs to indicate the person(s) buried in a particular plot or lair.
Look at a sample of the content for the Oxnam volume at http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=aKOwF4hYmSsC&printsec=frontcover&dq=%22oxnam%2Bmonumental%2Binscriptions%22.
We'll use this forum to tell you about new burial places which have been researched as soon as they are published.
We also want to hear from you about Borders burial places you would like to be researched, you could persuade us to do one in which you're interested sooner, however, please note that resources are limited.
More details on published volumes are at http://www.bordersfhs.org.uk/BFHSMIAllVolumes.asp

Poor Law Records A team of volunteers are actively engaged in transcribing and indexing digitised Poor Law records for various Borders parishes for the period 1845 to 1933.
The parishes are Bowden, Drumelzier, Eckford, Eddleston, Eyemouth, Kilbucho & Broughton & Glenholm, Hounam, Jedburgh, Kelso, Lilliesleaf, Linton, Makerstoun, Manor, Maxton, Morebattle, Oxnam, Peebles, Skirling, Smailholm, St Boswells, Stichill, Stobo, Traquair, Tweedsmuir, Yetholm.
These records are about applications for poor relief made by people who were settled in a Borders parish, but not necessarily living there, and provide unique information about the applicants, their families and their life; thus it could help you track down a person's previous or subsequent address if they moved away from their birth parish. Similarly, they'll also be of interest to people whose ancestors were not born in the Borders but may have lived or died in the Borders.
The contents for the Jedburgh Parish volumes comprise: Index to the Poor Law Records Images of the Poor Law Records History of the Parish History of the Poor Law Map and Bibliography Forename and Surname Index List of Borders Inspectors of the Poor Duties of Inspectors of the Poor
The contents for the Melrose Parish volumes comprise: Index to the Poor Law Records Images of the Poor Law Records History of the Parish History of the Poor Law Map and Bibliography Forename and Surname Index List of Borders Inspectors of the Poor Duties of Inspectors of the Poor Dingleton Asylum The Poor Law Diploma Examination
Details included in the index to the Poor Law Records include names, place of birth, age or date of birth, address, other family members, description of disablement, date of death, and there's more information on the images themselves, including occupation, benefit received.
See details of many people between the censuses. See married women's maiden surnames. Birth places sometimes differ from the census. We all know that the census birthplace is sometimes wrong, and at last, here's an alternative to searching the rest of Scotland. Family details often not shown in the census, religion, and disabilities. Find people who moved away from their birth place.
Most of all, you get the chance to put some flesh on the bones of those who up till now have just been names and dates.
As we learn more about the Poor Law and the way it worked, I expect that the historical text will be revised.
To search the index see our Research page - Poor Law Records Index at. http://www.bordersfhs.org.uk/BFHSPoorLawsearchform.asp
