Yarrow Monumental Inscriptions is another publication from the ‘Selkirkshire Antiquarians’.
The original church of the parish of Yarrow was the historic 'St Mary's of the Lowes' or the 'Forest Kirk' and was built about the 12th century at Kirkstead on the hillside overlooking St Mary's loch. Magnificient as its situation was, at the extreme western end of the parish, the attendance at worship, must have meant a long and arduous journey for most parishioners.
In 1640 a new church was erected on the Buccleuch property of Whitehope, in the centre of the parish. Only the ancient Kirkyard now remains at Kirkstead, but a historic link is preserved by the well known open-air Service of the 'Blanket Preaching' held in St Mary's Kirkyard on the afternoon of the fourth Sunday of July.
This was the Kirk known to Sir Walter Scott , to James Hogg and Willie Laidlaw, whose names are forever proudly associated with Yarrow Kirk. From his second home at Ashiestiel, Scott occasionally rode over the hills to visit the grave of his maternal grandfather John Rutherford, Minister of Yarrow from 1691-1710, whose grave is marked by an inscribed mural tablet set in the north wall.
There is a sole interment in the church, with a tablet of white marble commemorating James Lorimer, DD, who died in 1770.
As is usual with these volumes, there are a number of extra items. The volume includes inline colour photos of all the gravestones and the war memorial;. A militia list; school admissions 1874; and a place name index. Please note there’s no Hearth Tax list.
