My mother was A Varrie and I have done Her Family tree..And had Researchers do a lot of work on the Varrie Family

Posted - 09 July 2010 : 15:35:41 It occurs to me that vary[varrie] might be an anglicised spelling of Mhairi.
Mhairi is the vocative form of Mairi (Gaelic for Mary), used when speaking to Mairi.
I've not seen it as a surname, but Mhairi is common enough in the Borders as a first name (sometimes pronounced Varrie, sometimes Marrie).
