Posted - 20 December 2009 : 21:55:44 The Ettrick Kirkyard publication builds upon work undertaken in 1963 by the Selkirkshire Antiquarians which recorded information up to 1855 and covers records for Ettrick Kirk. Although the church itself only dates from 1824 it replaced an older building and the area is steeped in history with links back to the Abbey of Melrose in the 13th century.
It provides a full recording of the 235 monumental inscriptions together with colour photographs of the stones. Among the well known Scots interred in the Kirkyard are James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd and Tibbie Shiels. In addition to the inscription detail the publication also includes the militia lists and war memorial detail.
It reflects the enthusiasm of the Selkirkshire Antiquarians and will make a great gift for those tracing their family trees to this area of the Borders or simply with an interest in these beautiful parts of Scotland.
