I am in Australia ..You asked if Helen Laylaw married Robert Varrie
Yes she Did on the 11 December 1813 in Dalton Lockerbie Dumfries Scotland They only had 2 Children Wiiliam and James

My mother was A Varrie and I have done Her Family tree..And had Researchers do a lot of work on the Varrie Family

It occurs to me that vary[varrie] might be an anglicised spelling of Mhairi.

Mhairi is the vocative form of Mairi (Gaelic for Mary), used when speaking to Mairi.

I've not seen it as a surname, but Mhairi is common enough in the Borders as a first name (sometimes pronounced Varrie, sometimes Marrie).

I hope that helps, or at least is interesting.
