Seeking info as to whether anyone has come across a source for employees at Mertoun House in the late 1700s and early 1800s. I know there was a discussion back in 2010 that touched on the same question. My 3xgreat grandfather and grandmother are buried in the churchyard. I was told that it was likely that one of them would have worked on the estate if they were buried in the churchyard. Does that sound reasonable?
The Estate is owned by the Duke of Sutherland's family - there may have estate records that far back - worth checking
I assume that estate records for that time would still remain at the estate if they exist. Am I correct in assuming that or might they be archived elsewhere?
If I write the Duke:
1. How would I find the correct address? 2. How would an individual from the ex-colonies address a Duke? I'm guessing that "Dear Dukey" is way too familiar and "Your Highness" would be reserved for someone above the Duke's paygrade. I would like my request for information to start on the correct note.
As for a family plot, I don't think that would be the case since no ancestors or other relative is buried there with the exception of their youngest girl. She was a change of life baby and I highly suspect that she may have been disabled. I find her living with one brother or another after the death of her parents.
