Hidden away in the beautiful Tweed valley are the kirkyards of Traquair and Kailzie. Traquair has a long history closely associated with the Stuart family whilst Kailzie with its church, only re-built in 1921, has a history dating back to the 16th century.

We have just completed work on recording the gravestones in both churchyards and the CD is now ready. Cost £10 plus postage. Ordering details at http://www.bordersfhs.org.uk/BFHSPublications.asp .

The documented detail from the gravestones is fascinating in itself, providing information on families from the area not available anywhere else. However, of particular interest to those with Peeblesshire connections, is the detail on the militia roles from the Napoleonic era and the fascinating Traquair School Records covering part of the 19thcentury. The publication also includes some background on both churches.

The work is a true labour of love with the inscriptions and locations of stones carefully recorded and plotted by volunteers.

Just a few of the recorded names from the past include James Moffat of Cardrona on the Militia list of 1810, the Thomson family from the Glen who attended Traquair School in 1878, the Horsburgh family of that ilk and John Brown of Kailzie with some fascinating insights into his covenanting connections.

The 277 surnames indexed are:
